There is a Thai restaurant in Toyota City called ‘Golden Shower’, I kid you not. We were a little apprehensive when we first saw the place, as no doubt there are many places in Japan where one might go for an actual golden shower. But after a closer inspection it seems like this is just a Thai restaurant with an unfortunate name.
Some research taught me that the ‘golden shower tree’ is a beautiful flowering plant, native to South Asia. I guess the owners of the restaurant might not be aware of the other meaning of the term …

De gouden regen is een boom/struik die bloeit in Nederland met mijn verjaardag.
Ik kreeg als klein meisje altijd een kroontje van gouden regen in mijn haar op 3 juni.
Je webside is zo professioneel dat ik me eerst afvroeg of het misschien reclame was van Starbucks. Dat was de eerste keer dat ik jou nieuwsbrief heb gezien.
Ik ben een vriendin van je moeder en ben nu steeds blij verrast met je mails.

Bedankt voor de complimentjes over de blog. Het doet altijd veel plezier om te merken dat mensen de artikels met plezier lezen! Ironisch genoeg was ik in België helemaal geen fan van Starbucks, maar hier is het de dichtste benadering van een gezellig koffiehuisje die ik al ben tegengekomen. En geleidelijk aan ben ik dan toch fan geworden 🙂 De gouden regen is ook voor mij een leuke jeugdherinnering. Ik kan me voorstellen dat je je als een prinses voelt met een kroontje van gouden regen.
We are having a tree in Belgium that looks very much like the golden shower, You can find them so now and than in gardens. We call them ‘gouden regen’, i.e. golden rain.
But it’s not the same, since golden showers’ name in Latin is cassia fistula and our tree is called Laburnum
I remember the ‘golden rain’ plant (Laburnum) from our garden when I was a child. The ‘golden shower’ plant (Cassia Fistula) actually reminds me of the ‘blue rain’ plant (Wisteria sinensis) in front of our house.
An interesting name and aren’t you glad you did some research to find out the actually meaning. Very cool!
